PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner
WSRE launches PBS Kids® Raising Readers Library Corner
What do you get when you mix kids, books, online literacy activities and PBS characters together?
Family reading fun at the library!
WSRE and the West Florida Regional Library have partnered together to host the PBS Kids® Raising Readers Library Corner. The downtown Pensacola branch "library corner" gives children and parents the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills through fun, engaging multi-media platforms.
Fun-filled activities from PBS KIDS® Raising Readers series Sesame Street, WordWorld, Super Why!, Between the Lions, Martha Speaks, and the Electric Company are guaranteed to get everyone excited about reading.
PBS KIDS® Raising Readers is a national literacy campaign focused on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care centers and in the community. PBS KIDS® Raising Readers, funded by a Ready To Learn grant from the United States Department of Education, develops engaging PBS KIDS® programs, as well as exciting games, playful Web sites and easy-to-use learning resources for kids, parents, caregivers, and teachers — all with the goal of helping children ages 2–8 build the skills they need to learn to read, with a focus on the needs of children from low-resource families.
All content is built incorporating the latest research about the most effective ways to use media to help kids learn to read.
Visit the WSRE PBSKIDS® Raising Readers Corner at the Pensacola downtown library anytime during their business hours with a parent or friend to explore reading activities and games. It's a colorful and inviting area featuring the PBS characters you love and is a small setting where children can play games on a computer, read a book, or watch an educational and interactive literacy skill-building DVD.
The WSRE PBS KIDS® Raising Readers Corner gives children the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills through fun and engaging multi-media platforms ranging from self-directed worksheets, online reading games, online videos or parent-led activities using media clips from a broad selection of the PBS KIDS® shows.
All activities are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations and encompasses skills such as letter recognition, print awareness and vocabulary instruction.
WSRE is one of twenty local PBS stations in the United States building partnerships and helping to test and develop models to provide caregivers, teachers and parents with access to engaging research-based, multiplatform content, activities and tools. This "Literacy 360" approach surrounds children with opportunities to read, and there's no place better to start than the public library!
