WSRE premieres new episodes of two local programs Thursday night. Hosted by Sherri Hemminghaus Weeks at 7 p.m., “In Your Own Backyard” debuts the first of a three-part series on the “Forts of Pensacola Bay” with an exploration of Fort Pickens. PBS Presents Ken Burns’ “Jackie Robinson” April 11-12

“Jackie Robinson” is a new two-part, four-hour documentary, directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, that will air Monday and Tuesday, April 11–12, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on WSRE. The film tells the story of Jack Roosevelt Robinson, who rose from humble origins to break baseball’s color barrier and waged a fierce lifelong battle for first-class citizenship for all African Americans.

WSRE Airs In-Memoriam Broadcast of James Owens Film on Thursday

James Owens was Auburn University’s first African American scholarship football player. He played on the varsity team from 1970 to 1972. He died on Saturday, March 26 at age 65. In remembrance of the football pioneer, WSRE will air “Quiet Courage: The James Curtis Owens Story” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

Characters from WSRE’s PBS KIDS programs, including The Cat in the Hat, Curious George and The Man with The Yellow Hat, have visited local classrooms this week. The Cat in the Hat brought reading fun to students at N.B. Cook Elementary, while Curious George and The Man with The Yellow Hat read with VPK, kindergarten and special education classes.
