WSRE Launches Local “American Graduate” Campaign

WSRE has joined the national American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen initiative in support of community-based solutions to the high school dropout crisis. American Graduate uses the power and reach of public media to help communities across America improve graduation rates as well as college and career preparedness. The overall goal is to reach a national graduation rate of 90 percent by 2020.

Big Bird is Coming to Town “In Person”

WSRE is bringing the man inside Big Bird to Pensacola for a free lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the PBS station’s Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio. Caroll Spinney has played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on “Sesame Street” since the show began in 1969 and upon an invitation from Jim Henson to join the cast.

PBS Debuts Two New Documentaries on Tuesday – “The Bomb” and “Uranium – Twisting the Dragon’s Tail”

Two new PBS documentaries about the history and development of nuclear weaponry premiere Tuesday, July 28, beginning at 7 p.m. on WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast.  “The Bomb” is a two-hour film on the history of nuclear weapons and how they have shaped our modern world. Following at 9 p.m., “Uranium – Twisting the Dragon’s Tail” is an in-depth look at the chemical element used in nuclear weaponry.

Famed "Sesame Street" Puppeteer Caroll Spinney will Speak at WSRE

Caroll Spinney has been the man inside Big Bird from the beginning. With support from Gulf Power Company, WSRE’s Public Square Speakers Series will present the famed “Sesame Street” puppeteer at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in the Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio. Admission is free.

WSRE Wine & Food Classic Announces 2015 Dates and Details

In its 27th year, the WSRE Wine & Food Classic is the granddaddy of local foodie events. This year’s affair, themed Savor & Surf Southern, will begin with the annual walkabout tasting on Friday, Oct. 16. The following weekend, PBS celebrity chef John Besh will be WSRE’s honored guest for an afternoon book signing followed by a fundraising dinner on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Ethan Bortnick’s “A Celebration of America” Premieres July 4th

A new music special, “Ethan Presents: A Celebration of America,” was produced by WSRE for distribution on Public Broadcasting System TV stations nationwide. The patriotic concert was performed before a live audience of military service members at WSRE’s Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio in October. The show premieres locally at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 4.
