Sydney HaleName: Sydney Hale

Sydney Hale is a spunky, imaginative eight-year-old with a contagious laugh and a charming smile. Her favorite things to do include eating macaroni and cheese, playing the violin, having fun with friends, teaching tricks to “Prissy,” her miniature schnauzer ….and watching WSRE!

WSRE recently received a hand-written letter from Sydney to let us know that she’s a huge fan of Word Girl, a new PBS children’s program, which airs each Friday on WSRE at 4 p.m. “Word Girl is a magnificent show,” Sydney wrote, “I would really like it if you would put it on every day – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, too.”

Other favorite WSRE programs that Sydney has enjoyed include Sesame Street and DragonTales. She is quick to point out that she is too “grown-up” for those programs now. “But I did learn how to count when I was little by watching Sesame Street,” she admits with a grin.

Miss Sydney is quite the savvy television viewer who recognizes quality television when she sees it. “I love WSRE!” she declares. When asked why she watches WSRE to see her two of favorite programs, Word Girl and Arthur, Sydney matter-of-factly states, “I like those shows because they are educational. I learn a lot by watching. And they are funny!” Arthur teaches the third-grader, in her own words, to “be honest and treat others fairly.” Cyberchase is another one of Sydney’s favorite programs. “It helps me learn math,” she says, “Stuff like division and fractions.”

Sydney is home-schooled by her grandparents, who are raising her and whom she affectionately calls “Nonny” and “Poppy.” “Nonny,” who is also known as Jill Hale, allows Sydney to watch programs on WSRE because she trusts the quality of the programs and the integrity of PBS. “We don’t have to worry when Sydney watches WSRE because we know she’s going to learn in a safe environment,” Hale says, “And we enjoy watching WSRE, too.” Masterpiece Theatre and Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple are favorites for the adults in the Hale household.

And Sydney’s recommendation to other kids her age? “Watch WSRE because you can learn a lot and have fun, too.”

Good advice for life-long learners of every age!
