Dawn Quarles discusses her new memoir on “Conversations with Jeff Weeks”

“In Your Own Backyard” explores “The Forts of Pensacola Bay” in a three-part series

PENSACOLA, Fla., April 20, 2016—WSRE premieres new episodes of two local programs Thursday night. Hosted by Sherri Hemminghaus Weeks at 7 p.m., “In Your Own Backyard” debuts the first of a three-part series on the “Forts of Pensacola Bay” with an exploration of Fort Pickens. On “Conversations with Jeff Weeks” at 7:30 p.m., author Dawn Quarles discusses her recently published memoir, “Aprils & Decembers.”

Sitting at the entrance to Pensacola Bay, Fort Pickens was built in the late 1820s for the purpose of defending Pensacola Harbor before and during the Civil War. On the show, Gulf Islands National Seashore park management shares its storied history and leads viewers on a tour of the fort which witnessed Confederate aggression while under Union control.

Quarles, a Pace High School history teacher, shares how journal keeping during the highs and tragic lows of her life evolved into writing a highly personal book, which was released by Black Rose Publishing in December. “It’s kind of raw and tough to put it out there,” said Quarles, “but when I started putting those stories together, I woke up one day (with) this memoir....I have written my thoughts down since probably I learned how to write.”
