Last Updated by Mary Riker on

Guests Include Robert de Varona, Jerry Maygarden and Lester Spencer

PENSACOLA, Fla., November 12, 2015—Sherri Hemminghaus Weeks is the producer and host of this week’s “Visiting Cuba” edition of “inStudio,” a new local program on WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast. Robert de Varona, Jerry Maygarden and Lester Spencer are Weeks’ guests for a discussion on their personal experiences in Cuba, reflections on the island nation’s past and thoughts on its present and future in light of recent developments toward the normalization of relations with the United States. The show will air at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

Born in Camagüey, Cuba and now a resident of Pensacola, de Varona fought with a CIA-trained unit of Cuban exiles during the Bay of Pigs invasion. He was captured and survived nearly two years of imprisonment before being released to the U.S. in December 1962.

Maygarden and Spencer have traveled to Cuba in recent years and have their own unique perspectives on doing business with Cuba and visiting the country, which remains under communist rule. Maygarden, a local leader and former mayor of Pensacola, offers insight into the social, economic and political issues to be considered in doing business with Cuba. As the senior pastor of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church and a longtime leader of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, Spencer has led more than a dozen mission trips to Cuba since 1993.

WSRE launched “inStudio” in October. Barring preemptions for special events, “inStudio” will air bi-weekly on the second and fourth Thursdays at 7 p.m. The producer and host for each edition of “inStudio” comes from a rotation of seasoned on-air professionals including Weeks, Drexel Gilbert, Rameca Vincent Leary and Jeff Weeks.
