WSRE to rebroadcast J. Earle Bowden interview this week
Pensacola, FL, February 17, 2015—In remembrance of J. Earle Bowden, WSRE will air an interview with the well-respected journalist, political cartoonist, local historian, educator and environmentalist known as the “Father of Gulf Islands National Seashore” on a special rebroadcast of “Conversations with Jeff Weeks” airing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22.
Bowden, who died on Sunday, shared on the program his views on the renaissance of downtown Pensacola, the progress of local beach and waterfront development, historical and environmental preservation and how advancements in technology and the Internet have affected the newspaper business.
Bowden was editor in chief of the Pensacola News Journal for 31 years and continued on as editor emeritus. “I could never retire,” said Bowden, at age 84, to host Jeff Weeks during the show’s 2012 taping.
He was featured on WSRE’s award-winning documentary, “Gulf Islands National Seashore: The Treasure of the Gulf Coast,” about the pristine 160-mile stretch of untouched beaches, barrier islands, salt marshes, bayous and forests he was instrumental in establishing as a national park. As a local historian, he also contributed to the station’s documentary, “Baseball in Pensacola.”
