In just four years, Scoop's Reading Challenge has grown to serve nearly 17,000 students locally...not many can boast numbers like that! We're so lucky to have two local organizations like the Pelicans and WSRE committed to literacy, an initiative strongly supported by International Paper worldwide. Thank you for participating in this very important program; we all benefit by investing in our youth!

I LOVE this program! I've seen children change from children who only read "because you made me" become children who read because they want to. When you give them the ticket they are so excited! It's great for them to see that so many businesses in the community care about them. Thanks!!

My fifth graders participated in this program two years ago. My FCAT reading scores showed a years growth in the reading level of over 95% of the students in my classroom. After not using the program last year, and comparing scores, I decided this was a good program that should be repeated this year. The program will be used as before in conjunction with Accelerated Reading Program, Pizza Hut Book-it Award Program, and my Friday Read-A-Thon. Points are awarded for every book read with summary of book. Not only are the children calling words but they are understanding what they are reading and able to retain information read as they should. They have really developed a true love for reading. Thanks for ALL you do for Public Education.

I agree it does make a difference. I also use the program in conjunction with Book It and AR. In this way I have continuity that keeps my students reading all the way until the end of school. It is a real motivator for this "after testing/is it Spring Break yet?" time period.

As an active member of West Florida Home Education Support League (WFHESL), covering Escambia County and Santa Rosa County, I am so looking forward to participating in Scoop's Reading Challenge! For some time now, I have been receiving the WSRE emails, that lists the upcoming educational programs each week. Being able to find programs that apply to our lessons has been a great addition to our schooling. I watched last year, as the Pelican tickets were passed out to the parents in the South Cell Group and felt left out. Not this year! We are signed up and anxious to get started! Thanks for sponsoring such a wonderful program.

I decided to participate in the Scoop's Reading Challenge because one of my supervising teachers did this with her class during a practicum of mine and I saw what a success it was. I teach kindergarten, and my students are so excited! I gave them their first assignment the night before the challenge started, and one girl completed it the same night! I already have six students on first base and one that has tried for second base. For their first assignment, I made a list of all the sight words we have learned so far. For the second assignment, I made a list of all the appropriate three-letter words my students should be able to sound out using the letters we have learned. For the third assignment, I wrote a short story using some words from the first two assignments. For each of these assignments, students must read the assignment to an adult and have the adult sign their paper. They must then be able to read all words correctly or the story somewhat fluently to advance to the next base. In order to get a home run, students must read a library book to an adult. They should read as much of it as possible on their own. The adult may help them, but the student must repeat the words they do not know after the adult. I wanted to make the assignments challenging but yet alligned with the reading children already have to do for kindergarten. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it!

This is the second year that I have particiapted in the Scoop Reading Challenge. Even though my students are in the fifth grade, I find it amazing that they really get into the challenge. I push all year to get some students to read, but there are always a few who just do not like to pick up a book and enjoy it. With the challenge, they seem to want to read and have the opportunity to see a baseball game as well. Thank you for giving the extra initative for my students, along with other students in the community the incentive to pick up a book and READ!.
