SIGHTLINE Reading Service | Sightline Programming | How to Access Sightline | Weekly Archives | Descriptive Video Service | Readers' Calendar

Sightline ReadersSIGHTLINE is a reading service designed for people who have impaired vision or who are otherwise unable to read for themselves. SIGHTLINE provides timely news, information and entertainment to persons with disabilities everyday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The service operates from the Kugelman Center for Telecommunications and is a service of WSRE-TV and Pensacola Junior College.

SIGHTLINE is volunteer powered! Volunteers from all walks of life are recruited, trained and utilized to keep listeners informed of the latest news all year. Listeners are able to keep abreast of local, national and international news with the reading of the Pensacola News Journal. Novels and short stories come to life through the efforts of volunteer readers.

How to Access Sightline

Sightline is broadcast on the second audio program (SAP) of WSRE-TV's broadcast signal. This broadcast sideband is available to Public Broadcasting Stations nationwide. To access the SAP, Sightline listeners must have either a stereo television or a stereo videocassette recorder (VCR) that includes the SAP capability.

The SAP button (sometimes referred to as the MTS, AUDIO, AUDIO MODE, BILINGUAL, AUDIO B, MENU (leads to SAP), SET UP (leads to SAP), depending on the TV/VCR manufacturer), is located on the TV or VCR itself, or by using the remote control unit to call up the audio menu on the television screen. From this menu, the SAP format can easily be selected for your listening enjoyment. Remember to tune the television or VCR to WSRE-TV. The picture of the current program will remain on your TV screen; only the sound will change.

Selection of SAP while tuned into WSRE-TV should not affect your ability to enjoy other channels. Simply remove the SAP feature when you desire regular WSRE-TV sound. If you do not have a stereo TV or VCR, receiver units designed to access SAP may be obtained.

Now, you may also listen to SIGHTLINE over the internet via our Sightline Weekly Archives below.

Descriptive Video Service

You may also enjoy the Descriptive Video Service (DVS) on WSRE-TV by tuning into certain primetime shows and accessing the SAP feature on your TV or VCR. On these programs, a narrator carefully describes visual elements such as setting, action and facial expressions during natural breaks in the program's dialogue. When Sightline is not being broadcast, the National Weather Service broadcasts on the SAP channel.
