WSRE, viewer supported PBS for the Gulf Coast, is partnering with the National Parks Service at Gulf Islands National Seashore to provide professional development sessions for area K-12 teachers focusing on ways to strengthen curriculum through the use of technology. Join park rangers and master teachers as they offer presentations on the history, culture, science and beauty of America’s national parks with a focus on Gulf Islands National Seashore. The two-day conference will be held this weekend Friday, September 11, 6-9 p.m. at Ft. Pickens and Saturday, September 12, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at WSRE's Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio on the Pensacola Junior College campus located at 1000 College Boulevard. The conference costs $40 and ten-hours of in-service professional development credit will be awarded. From virtual fieldtrips to smartboards to geocaching, teachers will learn about a multitude of technologies available to them that is sure to change the way they teach and empower their students to take a more active role in their own learning process. Participants will also hear from Earle Bowden, known as “The Father of Gulf Islands National Seashore” due to his efforts to preserve Gulf Islands as a national park. Keynote speaker for the event is Joaquin Alverado, Senior Vice-President for Diversity & Innovation from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, who will speak about the educational impact of technology. Dine on delicious food, take home a wealth of knowledge, learn about a variety of valuable classroom resources, and sign up for door prizes.

Join WSRE and park rangers from Gulf Islands National Seashore for a candlelight tour of the fort, light refreshments ‘round the campfire and a star gaze, all especially designed for teachers. Learn the history of the national park located in our very own backyard.
